Saturday Wakefield Invite Results

WAKEFIELD – A total of 13 more matches were played during day two of the Wakefield Seven Team Round Robin Tournament on Saturday.

From both the Main Gym and Activity Center in Wakefield, the Trojans welcomed in the teams of Hartington Cedar Catholic, Ponca, Lutheran High Northeast, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Pierce.

For the host Wakefield in the Main Gym, the Trojans were swept by Pierce (20-25, 21-25) before winning in straight sets against Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (25-20, 28-26) and also sweeping Lutheran High Northeast (25-18, 25-20) in the Activity Center. Wakefield closed the afternoon with a loss in three sets against Ponca (21-25, 25-23, 20-25).

Pierce won all six of their matches on Thursday and Saturday to be crowned champion while Hartington Cedar Catholic went 5-1 (only loss was a 20-25, 23-25 loss to Pierce on Thursday) to finish runner-up. There was a three-way tie for third place between Wakefield, Ponca and Lutheran High Northeast who all went 3-3.

Since the first two tie breaker methods of record and head to head weren’t applicable, the deciding tie breaker was points allowed.  Wakefield was awarded third place since they allowed the fewest points in the six games played.

Wakefield is now 8-6 on the season.

In the loss against Pierce, Daveigh Munter-McAfee (four digs) and Alex Arenas (six digs) both finished with eight kills, Laken Rahn (two digs) added two kills as Alli Brown (two digs) and Brianna Martinez (one digs) both had a kill. Jordan Metzler recorded 20 assists and four digs, Isabella Andrade led the team in digs with eight as MaKenna Decker tallied a dig.

Rahn and Brown both had a service ace.

During the win over LCC, Arenas led the team in kills with 16 to go along with seven digs, Munter-McAfee added six kills and nine digs, Brown tallied five kills and a team-high 14 digs as Rahn (two digs) and Martinez both had three kills. Metzler finished with 26 assists, five digs and a kill as Andrade had 10 digs.

Rahn had three service aces, Arenas added two and Munter-McAfee had an ace. Arenas also had a solo block.

From the victory with LHNE, Munter-McAfee posted a team-high in both kills with nine and digs with 18, Arenas followed with six kills and nine digs, Brown had six kills and three digs, Martinez added three kills and a dig as Rahn tallied a kill. Metzler closed with 17 assists, seven digs and two kills as Andrade had seven digs.

Metzler and Arenas both had two service aces as Brown and Andrade both had an ace. Martinez and Arenas also both had a block.

In the three-set loss against Ponca, Arenas posted a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs, Brown added seven kills and a dig, Munter-McAfee tacked on four kills and 11 digs, Rahn had three kills and six digs as Martinez tallied a kill and two digs. Metzler recorded 27 assists, six digs and a kill as other digs came from Andrade (nine) and Ashlyn Riewer (seven).

Andrade had two service aces while Arenas, Metzler and Rahn all added an ace. Rahn and Brown both finished with two blocks as Metzler and Martinez each had a block.

The Wakefield volleyball team will next visit Howells-Dodge on Tuesday, September 13.
