Commissioners Support 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County Declaration

WAYNE – Only a handful of agenda items took up Tuesday morning’s regularly scheduled Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting.

From the Wayne County Courthouse courtroom, the board heard from Wayne native Scott Sievers on the 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County Declaration.

Sievers stated this will bring peace of mind and comfort to folks in favor of the 2nd Amendment as the board approved the declaration unanimously (3-0). Earlier this month on April 14, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts signed a proclamation declaring Nebraska a “Second Amendment Sanctuary State”.

The White House and U.S. Congress have announced their intention to pursue measures that would infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. A growing number of counties in Nebraska have declared themselves as ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary’ counties and more are scheduled to meet.

Wayne County Emergency Manager, Nic Kemnitz also updated commissioners on upcoming events.

The EOC trailer will be at the Wayne Airport during the MayDay STOL Drag next week and be a central spot for safety/security information. Area responders will be holding an Emergency Response Planning meeting on Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. from the Wayne Fire Hall for this event.

Also, Kemnitz informed the board that NET will be changing out an electrical transformer at the tower site by Carroll in the coming days. When this occurs, the county will temporarily power their communications equipment at the site with a portable generator. This could last for around four hours. The annual Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) incident tracking and accountability training with the Salamander ID system will be May 20 – 23. This event will take place at the Fire School in Grand Island.

Initially during approval of the claims, commissioners pulled both claims for Kingery Construction and Berggren Architects. Doug Elting with Berggren stated there is still work to be completed on the punch list and he didn’t have any new information to report from the contractor. The board eventually approved the claim for Berggren Architect but still held off on the Kingery Construction claim since not a lot of work is being done. Elting stated he’ll follow up with the contractor and see what he can do.

Members with Blattner Energy were also in attendance going over information about the Haystack Wind Energy Project.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet on Tuesday, May 4 at 9 a.m.
