Wildcats Get Hot Behind Three-Point Stripe, Zacharias Drops 37 Points

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – A late afternoon ball game opened the weekend schedule for the Wayne State College women during the Colorado Mesa Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic Women’s Basketball Tournament.

From the Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, CO, WSC competed against Fort Lewis on Friday.

The Wildcat women picked up a 90-60 victory marking their second time this season scoring 90+ points. WSC is now 3-1 on the season while Fort Lewis fell to 3-2.

Wayne State College held a slight 17-12 first quarter lead before outscoring Fort Lewis, 27-12 to lead 44-24 at the break. WSC won both second half quarters of 26-19 and 20-17 to win 90-60.

Senior Lauren Zacharias stole the show (12-18 FG/7-10 3PT/6-6 FT) pouring in 37 points in 22 minutes to go along with two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Sophomore Delaney Clark also scored double figures (5-8 FG/4-7 3PT) with 14 points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Other scoring came from senior Logan Hughes (seven rebounds) with nine points; senior Kassidy Pingel (six rebounds/one assist/one block/one steal) with seven points; freshman Rachel Dahlen (two rebounds/two assists/one block) with six points; sophomore Abby Kopecky (eight rebounds/five assists/one steal) with five points; sophomore Maya Fitzpatrick (two rebounds/three assists/three steals) with four points; senior Ashley Gustavson (two rebounds/two assists) with three points; freshmen Kylah Vandonkersgoed (one rebound/one block/one steal) and Emma Schweigert both had two points as junior Annie Guentzel scored a point.

Wayne State College shot 33-63 (52.4%) from the field, 14-30 (46.7%) from behind the arc and 10-12 (83.3%) at the foul line.

 

Fort Lewis leaders were Lanae Billy (4-13 FG/3-6 3PT/10-10 FT) with 21 points, a rebound, two assists, a block and four steals as well as Kelsey Sorenson (6-11 FG/3-8 FT) with 15 points, six rebounds and six steals.

Fort Lewis finished 18-50 (36%) from the floor, 4-12 (33.3%) at the three-point line and 20-29 (69%) from the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College women’s basketball team will close out their time in Colorado against the host Colorado Mesa at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
