Wayne High Softball Takes Control Of Third Inning With Eight Runs

WAYNE – With a weekend tournament approaching for the Wayne High softball team, the Blue Devils were back in action on the home diamond Thursday evening.

From the Softball Complex, WHS welcomed in Tekamah-Herman.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Wayne High rattled off eight more runs in the third to win 9-0. The Blue Devils have now won eight straight to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Virginia Kniesche singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice while Brianna Nissen singled twice, drove in a run and scored for Wayne. Kendall Dorey singled twice and drove in a run; Kierah Haase doubled and scored twice; Brooklyn Kruse singled, drove in two runs and scored; Taytum Sweetland singled, drove in a run and scored; Hope O’Reilly accounted for a RBI and run scored as Hailey Schroeder scored.

Kendall Dorey picked up the win in five innings allowing two hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

Wayne High will next open the 2020 Mercy High School Varsity Softball Invitational in Omaha at 9 a.m. against South Sioux City Saturday. The winner or loser will next play at 10:45 a.m. against either Plattsmouth or Platteview while the other half of the bracket will feature the host, Omaha Mercy vs. Blue River and North Bend vs. Bishop Neumann. The final games will be played at 1 p.m.

A few notes for those attending the Mercy Tourney:

Masks are required in the complex; no admission as donations will be accepted; two immediate family members per player will be allowed entrance; bring chairs as there’ll be limited seating; no water fountains (bring enough water for players and yourself) and concessions will be available.
