Wakefield Girls Build First Half Lead, Trojan Boys Post Fourth Quarter Comeback Over LCC

WAKEFIELD – With the Lewis & Clark Conference tourney beginning this weekend into next week, a pair of conference opponents went to work during a regular season outing Thursday evening.

From the main gym at Wakefield Community School, the Trojans welcomed in Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.

The Wakefield girls defeated LCC, 54-38 while the Trojan boys came back and won 53-49 over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.

In the girls game, Wakefield jumped ahead 19-9 after the first and edged the Bears 15-14 in the second. The Trojans led 34-23 at the break. Wakefield then extended their lead thanks to a 10-3 third quarter before LCC answered with a 12-10 fourth. Final again favored Wakefield, 54-38. Wakefield improved to 12-5 while the Bears fell to 6-11.

Freshman Jordan Metzler went off for 20 points (four made three’s) for Wakefield followed by junior Aishah Valenzuela with 15 points. Senior Kassidy Brudigam poured in five points while senior Rachel Borg, sophomore Alex Arenas and senior Maddie Mogus all finished with four points as senior Anna Lundahl tallied two points.

Wakefield shot 12-16 from the foul line.

LCC was led by junior Kinsey Hall with 14 points while junior Jordynn Urwiler added eight points. Senior Erica Wolfgram had five points, junior Reggan Kuhlman finished with four points, sophomore Haley Christensen and freshman Mallory Eriksen both had three points as freshman Delaney Johnson tallied a point.

The Bears finished 14-28 from the foul line.

During the boys game, LCC held the early advantage with an 18-15 first and 11-7 second quarter. The Bears were up 29-22 at the break. Wakefield then outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 15-13 in the third and 16-7 in the fourth to win 53-49. The Trojans won their fourth straight improving to 14-2 while LCC dropped their third straight now at 10-7.

Senior Blake Brown went 13-15 from the foul line for the Trojans finishing with 24 points as fellow senior Justin Erb came away with 16 points. Senior Nick Arenas poured in six points, sophomore Cade Johnson added five points and junior Logan Bokemper had two points.

The Trojans shot 14-21 from the foul line.

Junior Evan Haisch scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half (6-6 FT) to lead LCC, followed by junior Deagan Puppe with nine points and sophomore Jake Rath with eight points. Senior Cael Hartung added six points, senior Wilton Roberts fouled out with five points and senior Austin Hall had three points.

LCC finished 8-13 from the foul line.

Both the LCC and Wakefield girls will next compete in their conference tournament this Saturday, January 30. From Laurel, #9 LCC will face #16 Winside at 7:30 p.m. in the Clark Tournament while #3 Wakefield will compete against #6 Tri County Northeast at 6 p.m. in Wynot during the Lewis Tournament.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys will next visit Creighton Friday during a rescheduled game while the Wakefield boys will be off until the Lewis Conference Tournament on Monday, February 1. #4 Wakefield will meet #5 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in Osmond at 6 p.m.
