Despite Three Second Half Turnovers, West Point-Beemer Scores Late During Wayne’s Homecoming Night

WAYNE – Friday evening capped off week seven of the NSAA high school football schedule where Wayne High played host to another ranked opponent.

From Bob Cunningham field on the campus of Wayne State College, WHS played host to #8 West Point-Beemer.

West Point-Beemer jumped out to a 10-0 lead before losing three second half turnovers. But, the Cadets got the ball back and scored with under a minute to play winning 23-22. West Point-Beemer improves to 6-1 on the season as the Blue Devils fell to 3-4.

Following a scoreless quarter, West Point-Beemer knocked through a field goal early in the second quarter. The Cadets put more points on the board after a WHS turnover on downs where the Cadets scored a touchdown. Following the extra-point, West Point-Beemer led 10-0.

Wayne High was able to get on the board late in the second quarter when Casey Koenig scored. After the successful two-point conversion, Wayne High trailed 10-8.

Halftime score saw West Point-Beemer leading Wayne, 10-8.

In the second half, Wayne High recovered a fumble on West Point-Beemer’s first possession, but the Cadets caught a pick-six a few plays later to extend their lead to 16-8 (blocked PAT) with 4:28 to play in the third quarter.

With just under 10 minutes to play in the game, Tyler Gilliland connected with Marcus Fertig on a 10-yard passing touchdown. The two-point conversion was failed, as West Point-Beemer still led 16-14.

WHS recovered a fumble on the very next possession and punched in the then go-ahead score by Casey Koenig from three-yards out while also converting the two-point conversion to lead 22-16.

The Blue Devils also recorded an interception on a fourth quarter halfback-pass with about six minutes remaining the in the game. Wayne’s offense stalled and were forced to punt which allowed the Cadets to score on a quarterback sneak with :37 seconds to go. The Cadets converted the extra-point and held on for the 23-22 win.
