PONCA – A series of events have been set up for family fun at a northeast Nebraska state park.

According to a release from Ponca State Park, open the month of October with a sunset hike on the Corps. Of Discovery.

The Friday, October 1 event will last from 6 until 7:30 p.m. as guests will finish their day off with a Ponca Naturalist to view the sunset over the Missouri National Recreational River. Meet at the Riverfront Campground playground for this free event as the trail is rated at moderate to difficult and approximately 1.5 miles long.

Moving into Saturday, October 2 a handful of events will begin from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. to celebrate Nebraska Reptile Month. Learn more about what makes reptiles special, the different types of critters you might find around the park and see three of Nebraska’s reptiles up close.

Some materials will be provided for parkgoers to create their own masterpiece and enter it into the Nebraska Game and Parks Reptile Month Art contest. Plan on meeting behind the Resource and Education Center for this free event.

From 11 – 11:45 a.m. attendees will be able to learn the most important skills to master while learning more about the basics of outdoor survival with a focus on shelter crafting. Meet at the G-8 campsite for this free event as examples of man-made shelters, location choice and shelter orientation will be covered.

Close out Saturday afternoon with campfire cooking between 1 – 1:45 p.m. Ponca State Park Naturalists will teach guests fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking a snack. Pre-register at the Resource and Education Center between 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. as cost is $3 per kit.

The lone activity on Sunday, October 3 will be introduction to Atlatl. Equipment is provided for those eight-years and older with adult supervision from 9 – 11 a.m. Cost is $1 per six shots and you can meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

Also, save the dates of Saturday, October 9 and 16 for the 23rd annual Hallowfest. Activities such as take-and-go crafts, pumpkin rolling, pumpkin carving, cabin and campsite decorating as well as a haunted drive will all be put on display.
