50 Years Of Kolach Days Celebrated In Verdigre This Week

VERDIGRE – Verdigre’s Kolach Days celebration is turning 50 this year and is offering four days packed with events to celebrate Czech heritage and the town.

A variety show will open Kolach Days this year on Thursday at 7 p.m. Verdigre’s Community Chorus will perform in the school gym. The show, entitled “Tribute to Legends,” will also be performed Friday. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Friday will have events like a pool party from 1-3 p.m. and free swimming until 6. Alpine Village will hold the kiddie parade at 6 p.m. Main Street will see a Cruise Night from 7-9, and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” will be shown in the park at dark.

Saturday morning at 8 a.m. runners and walkers will take off on the 5K Run-Walk and 10K Run. Those interested can register for $15 at 7 a.m. At 10 a.m. the Tractor Drive will take off from the high school, and from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. those in attendance can enjoy inflatables geared for all ages. Turtle races will be held at 11 a.m. followed by a sand dig, softball tournament and duck races. Verdigre High School’s Alumni Banquet will also be held Saturday.

All faiths are welcome to attend Polka Mass, Sunday morning at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. The Gazebo on Main Street will be the site of the Kolach Days BBQ at 11 Sunday morning, and the grand parade will begin at 1:30. After the parade will be the kolach eating contest and the Royal Ball crowning a new king and queen will be at 4:30.
