WSC Baseball Competes With Ranked Opponent

WAYNE – Members of the Wayne State College baseball team played host to a ranked opponent Wednesday afternoon.

From the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex, WSC hosted #24 Augustana University in a midweek doubleheader.

The visiting Vikings picked up wins of 4-1 and 10-7. Wayne State College has now dropped six straight falling to 21-14 (16-9 NSIC) while Augustana improved to 29-6 (21-4 NSIC) winning 12 in a row.

In the opening game, neither team scored the first two innings until Augustana broke open with a three-run third inning. Both teams then scored a run in the fourth. Final in the seven-inning game favored the Vikings winning 4-1 while Wayne State College outhit Augie, 5-4.

Alex Calabrese doubled and drove in a run while Quinn McCafferty singled and scored for WSC.

Other singles came from Carter Thomas, Chase Douglas and Cade Lynam.

Jackson Shelburne (1-3) suffered the loss in four innings allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits while striking out five batters, walking one and hitting four. Jacob Kneifl worked the final three innings striking out five batters and walking one.

 

During the second outing, both teams scored two runs in the first inning followed by a 6-3 advantage in the second inning for Augustana to lead 8-5. WSC added a single run in the third before both teams were scoreless the next three innings. Augie outscored the Wildcats, 2-1 in the seventh with the final favoring the Vikings winning the nine-inning game, 10-7 and outhitting WSC, 10-9.

It was a big afternoon for Colin Lynam with a solo homerun, two doubles, a single, three total RBI and two runs scored while Braden Cannon doubled, drove in a run and scored for WSC.

Douglas singled, drove in a run and scored; McCafferty singled and drove in two runs; Cam Madsen singled and scored; Kaden Young singled as Thomas and Calabrese both scored.

Brody Sintek (1-1) suffered the loss in an inning and two-thirds of relief allowing six earned runs off four hits while walking three batters. Kyler Hanson started the first third of an inning allowing two earned runs off two hits while striking out one batter and walking three.

Kadyn Van Hill worked two innings striking out two batters and walking one. Eli Crnkovich pitched two and two-thirds allowing two earned runs off three hits while walking two batters and hitting one. Josh Kilzer came in for an inning and a third striking out three batters. Cannon closed out the final inning allowing one hit while striking out and hitting one batter each.

The Wayne State College baseball team will next host St. Cloud State on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 – 21. Games will start at noon on Saturday to open the three-game series with the Huskies.
