Wayne State Splits With Northern State, Sunday Outing Canceled In Top Of Fifth

WAYNE – Following a pair of road wins earlier in the week, the Wayne State College baseball team was back on their home diamond.

From the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex, WSC opened a series with Northern State on Saturday during senior day.

Wayne State College won the first game, 14-1 followed by a 5-2 loss. WSC is now 25-17 (20-12 NSIC) while the Wolves moved to 18-26 (13-21 NSIC).

In the opening game, WSC scored early and often with back-to-back two-run innings in the first and second followed by a five-run third to lead 9-0. Following two scoreless innings, Wayne State outscored Northern State, 5-1 in the sixth. Final favored the Wildcats winning 14-1 as WSC also won the hit department, 14-6.

Chase Douglas singled three times, drove in two runs and scored twice; Carter Thomas singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; Trey Wells singled, tripled, drove in two runs and scored; Alex Calabrese singled twice, drove in a run and scored as Nick Barnett tripled, drove in three runs and scored.

Kyler Essink singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Dylan Jutze singled, drove in a run and scored; Jack Jones and Cam Madsen both singled and scored as Colin Lynam and Quinn McCafferty both scored.

Jackson Shelburne (2-3) picked up the win in five innings allowing two hits while striking out three batters, walking two and hitting two. Brody Sintek worked the final two innings allowing an earned run off four hits while striking out one batter.

 

During the second outing, WSC led early with a run in the second inning. Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Northern State posted a five-run fifth inning. Wayne State answered with just one more run in the sixth. Neither team scored the final three innings with the final favoring the Wolves winning 5-2 as both teams recorded eight hits.

Colin Lynam singled three times, Essink singled twice as McCafferty doubled, drove in a run and scored.

Madsen singled and scored as Douglas singled.

Nathan Anderson (2-4) suffered the loss in six and a third innings allowing five earned runs off seven hits while striking out five batters, walking one and hitting two. Josh Kilzer worked the final two and two-thirds allowing one hit while striking out three batters and walking one.

 

Wayne State College and Northern State was scheduled to close out their series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game at noon in Wayne. The game was moved up to 10:30 a.m. but was eventually canceled due to weather following a second lightning delay in the top of the fifth inning on Sunday.

The Wildcats are next scheduled to play two more opponents on the road. WSC will visit Minnesota State-Mankato on Tuesday, April 30 at 1:30/3:30 p.m. before closing out their regular season at Winona State on Friday, May 3 at 1:30/3:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 4 at noon.
