Wayne Girls Take Runner-Up, Bolles Wins Event; Yarde Paces Blue Devil Boys With Event Win

BATTLE CREEK – One final tune-up meet was on the schedule for the Wayne High girls and boys track and field team prior to district competition next week.

From Battle Creek, the Blue Devils joined six other teams during the Battle Creek Invite on Thursday.

The Wayne High girls finished runner-up with 97 points while the Blue Devil boys placed fourth with 72 points.

Head Wayne track and field coach, Dale Hochstein said, “we had numerous PRs again today (Thursday) as we moved some people around to try to set up the best possible situations to qualify people for the State Track Meet. The team responded very well and used the best weather day of the season to bring down their times.”

In the girls division, the host Bravettes won the Battle Creek Invite with 149 points, followed by Wayne in runner-up (97), West Holt took third (85), Columbus Scotus placed fourth (84) and Cedar Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 80 points.

The Wayne High girls were led by an individual champion of Nyla Bolles in the 400-meter dash (1:03.3).

Bolles also placed second in the 200-meter dash (27.78), fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.32) and fourth in the pole vault (8′).

Other runner-up finishes came from Linnea Skoldenberg in the 800-meter run (2:38.85), Lilyan Hurner in the 3200-meter run (13:59.69) and Elle Powicki in the 100-meter hurdles (15.45).

Other points were recorded by Alexis Legler in the 400-meter dash (third – 1:04.81), Josie Ley in the 3200-meter run (third – 14:27.57), Reginae Menyweather in the 300-meter hurdles (third – 51.5) and 100-meter hurdles (fourth – 17.69), Elle Powicki in the 300-meter hurdles (fourth – 51.71), Delaney Kruse in the shot put (sixth – 32 ‘ 7 1/4″) as well as the discus (sixth – 104′ 11″), Jacen Hasemann in the triple jump (fifth – 30′ 9 3/4″) as well as the long jump (sixth – 15’ 2 1/4″) and Kate Hill in the 100-meter hurdles (sixth – 18.88) as well as the 300-meter hurdles (54.06).

In relays, the 4×800 (Faith Powicki, Skoldenberg, Kennasyn Blecke and Nyamalo Kantai) placed third in 10:59.29, the 4×100 (Menyweather, Alexis Legler, Elle Powicki, Kierah Haase) took fourth in 54.27, the 4×400 (Menyweather, Elle Powicki, Alexis Legler, Faith Powicki) finished in fifth in 4:36.57 and the Sprint Medley Relay 800-meter team of Haase, Clara Ankeny, Skoldenberg and Blecke placed fifth in 5:02.6.

During the boys division, the host Braves won the Battle Creek Invite with 182 points, followed by Columbus Scotus in runner-up (109), West Holt took third (88.33), Wayne placed fourth (72) and Cedar Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 66 points.

The Wayne High boys were led by Isaiah Yarde winning the high jump at 5′ 10″.

Runner-up finishes came from Kasen York in the 800-meter run (2:04.42), Drew Miller in the 1600-meter run (4:51.81) and 3200-meter run (10:34.47) as well as Grant Maas in the pole vault (13′).

Other points were recorded by Sam Junck in the long jump (third – 19′ 4 1/2″), Mason Ley in the pole vault (fourth – 11′ 6″), Boden Dobbins in the 400-meter dash (fourth – 56.69), Cole Zach in the 200-meter dash (sixth – 23.94), Daevin Casarrubias in the 400-meter dash (sixth – 58.75), Alvaro Archundia in the 3200-meter run (sixth – 11:20.38), Konnor Kai in the triple jump (sixth – 36′ 3″) and Thomas Raymundo-Bacillio in the 1600-meter run (sixth – 5:11.23).

In relays, the Sprint Medley Relay 800-meter of Casarrubias, Konnor Kai, Dobbins, Raymundo-Bacillio finished third in 4:08.39, the 4×400 (Zach, York, Taven Ocampo, Gabriel Armstrong) came in fifth in 3:49.98, the 4×100 (Zach, Gabriel Armstrong, Casarrubias, Tavon Ocampo) took sixth in 47.74 and the 4×800 (Raymundo-Bacillio, Dobbins, Landen Claussen, Archundia) placed sixth in 9:28.81.

The Wayne High girls and boys track and field team will next compete in the B-4 District on Tuesday, May 7 in Albion hosted by Boone Central.
