NSAA State Baseball Brackets Released, #8 Wayne Vs. #1 Malcolm Saturday At 6:30 PM

ELKHORN – Wayne High will make a return appearance in the postseason for a second straight year of the Class C NSAA State Baseball Championships.

According to a release from the NSAA, times have been adjusted to the opening round due to the Saturday, May 11 Wayne High 2023-24 Commencement at 1 p.m.

Class A State Baseball will begin on Friday, May 10 at both Werner Park in Omaha and UNO – Tal Anderson Field while Class B from both Werner Park and Tal Anderson Field as well as Class C all at Frerichs Field in Elkhorn will open their double-elimination tournament on Saturday, May 11.

The Blue Devils have earned the #8 seed after winning 1-0 in eight innings at Adams Central last Friday. Gavin Redden drove in Kaleb Moormeier thanks to a RBI double in the top of the eighth inning. Redden (112 pitches) also pitched a completed game shutout allowing five hits while striking out six batters, walking one and hitting one.

Wayne High has won two straight and are now 14-7 on the season.

WHS will open against #1 Malcolm (19-3) on Saturday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the night-cap in bracket one. Also, in bracket one will be #4 Central City/Centura (17-7) vs. #5 Douglas County West (13-5) at 10 a.m. to open Saturday.

During the final game of the regular season, Malcolm won 10-4 hosting Wayne High on April 29.

Bracket two will feature #2 Platteview (14-9) vs. #7 Adams Central (14-6) at 12:30 p.m. followed by #3 Lincoln Christian (14-4) vs. #6 Mount Michael Benedictine (11-11) at 4 p.m.

Last year in the first-ever Class C State Tournament, WHS went 3-2 and will now be competing in their 13th state tournament in program history. This marks the first repeat trip to state since the 1973-1976 teams.

Loser’s bracket games would be played at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. followed by winner’s bracket games at 4/6:30 p.m. all on Monday, May 13 from UNO – Tal Anderson Field. The 2024 NSAA State Baseball Championships will be on Saturday, May 17 at Werner Park.

Other state tournament qualifiers who Wayne competed against during the regular season were Central City/Centura (15-4 home loss), Platteview (14-3 home loss), two games with Adams Central (2-0 home loss in season-opener/won 1-0 in District final) as well as a scheduled home game with DC West canceled due to weather.
