Blue Devil Baseball Drops Third Straight; Platteview Plates 11 In Eighth

WAYNE – With top Class C NSAA High School baseball competition recently taking place in Wayne, the Blue Devils were back on their home diamond to open the week.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, WHS hosted Platteview on Monday.

The visiting Trojans secured a 14-3 victory to improve to 8-8 while the Blue Devils fell to 10-4 dropping their third straight game.

Wayne High took the early lead thanks to a pair of runs in the home half of the first inning. Following three scoreless innings, WHS added a run in the fifth to lead 3-0. Platteview then mounted their comeback with a run in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 entering extras. The Trojans took advantage in the top of the eighth pouring in 11 runs and held onto the 14-3 victory. Platteview won the hit department, 16-5.

Calvin Ankeny singled twice and drove in a run while Gavin Redden and Devin Anderson both singled and drove in a run for Wayne.

Ryan Karsky singled; Kaleb Moormeier scored twice as Jaxson Kneifl scored.

Wayne used five pitchers in the game starting with Gavin Anderson (92 pitches) with six innings allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits while striking out four batters, walking three and hitting one. Kneifl (28) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits while walking and hitting one batter each in one inning.

Will Leseberg (12) allowed two earned runs off one hit not recording an out; Moormeier (22) pitched a third of an inning allowing six runs (five earned) off five hits while striking out and walking one batter each as Devin Anderson (12) closed out the final two-thirds of an inning allowing a run off one hit.

The Wayne High baseball team was scheduled to visit Twin River on Tuesday, April 16 but now has been postponed due to weather. A make-up date is being worked out.
