March Traffic Fatality Toll

LINCOLN – Data was again collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation during the month of March for a recent traffic fatality toll.

According to a mid-April release from NDOT, 22 people were killed in 18 fatal crashes in March.

Nine of the 19 vehicle occupants killed were not using seatbelts, seven were using their seatbelt and three had seatbelt usage marked as unknown.

A total of 18 fatalities were in rural locations (the Federal Highway Administration definition for urban is an area with a population of 5,000 or more). There were two fatalities on the interstate, 15 on other highways and five on local roads during the month of March. One of the fatalities was a pedestrian while two of the fatalities involved motorcyclists.

Through three months, only 10 of the 45 vehicle occupants killed were using seatbelts.

Compared to March of 2023, there were 17 fatalities. The 55 fatalities through March of 2024 is above the average from the past four years with the 2020-23 average being 49 fatalities during that same period.
