WAYNE – With graduation taking center stage on Saturday on the campus of Wayne State College, summer projects will begin in a few short days.

According to a release from WSC, several projects will affect streets and traffic around Wayne State College beginning on Monday, May 6.

During an April Wayne City Council meeting, the City of Wayne approved to vacate a portion of Walnut Street between Hillcrest Road and extending north to the corner of 14th Street.

Wayne State College will then permanently close off Walnut Street from the north corner of Hillcrest Road going between the Center for Applied Technology (CAT) building on the west side of the road and the new Residence Hall (Stearns Hall) on the east side of the road. This would allow pedestrians to cross without the worry of motor vehicles going by for construction on the extension of the ‘Campus Commons’.

There will no longer be through traffic on Walnut Street between Hillcrest Road and Lindahl Dr. (14th St.).

The section of Walnut Street past the CAT and residence hall north up to Lindahl Drive (14th St.) will be closed from May 6 – July 31. The pedestrian path from Lot 10 to campus will remain open from May 6 – July 31 for those parking in Lot 10.

Also, work on the replacement of a main water line underneath Lindahl Dr. (14th St.) will last from May 6 – July 31. Lindahl Drive will be closed from Stadium Drive east to the northeast corner of Lot 10 from May 6 to July 31. The only entrance and exit for Lot 10 will be at the northeast corner of the lot.

At the west end of Anderson Drive, adjacent to Anderson Hall, all 15-minute zones will be removed, and the one-way traffic sign will be temporarily taken down. Two-way traffic will be allowed on Anderson Drive during the construction project from May 6 – July 31. A temporary stop sign will be placed at the west end of Anderson Drive to accommodate the temporary two-way traffic.

At the east end of Anderson Drive adjacent to the Student Center, parking spaces will be temporarily removed to allow vehicles to turn around and exit Anderson Drive on the west end. This space also will be utilized for construction materials and parking for work in the Student Center. The east end of Anderson Drive will not exit onto Lindahl Drive during construction.

WSC officials request commuters to use extreme caution on Anderson Drive if you wish to park/drive there during the construction project. It is recommended that you park in other areas of campus to alleviate traffic on Anderson Drive. Parking Lot #3 (Energy Plant) and Schriener Drive will be closed during the project. All other campus lots and campus streets will be available for parking.

Contact Campus Security at 402-375-7216 with any questions related to parking during this project.
