WAYNE – Late last month Great Dane Wayne celebrated National Welder’s Month by hosting instructors and students from two northeast Nebraska high schools.

According to a release, Stanton and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge received welding helmets, gloves, flame-resistant welding apparel and face shields for their welding classes.

During the on-site visit, students had the opportunity to see first-hand how vital welders are in building high-quality Great Dane trailers that deliver goods across the country. This special event is held annually at Great Dane Wayne, with all local high schools invited on a rotating basis so students throughout the community have this opportunity.

Tony Weise, Great Dane Wayne plant manager said, “welders have helped build our nation as an important part of transportation construction, from trains and ships to automobiles and planes. The welders at Great Dane are highly skilled, hard workers who help build world-class truck bodies and trailers. By partnering with local high schools and providing welding equipment, we hope to encourage students who are interested in making welding their career.”
In addition to Great Dane weld shop employees and leadership, the students had the opportunity to meet employees who work in operations, human resources, quality control and engineering. Students also toured the plant and saw how the best trailer in the industry is built right in their backyard.

Weise added, ‘we also shared how safety is a fundamental value of our company and that we pull together with our Think Safety First program to keep our employees safe on the job so each person can return home to their families without injury. It’s Great Dane’s values—quality, integrity, teamwork, safety, innovation, and sustainability—that have allowed us to be a leader in the industry for 124 years. We hope the students were inspired by our work and our story.”
