ORANGE, CA – The second of three straight games to open the 2019-20 season continued for the Wayne State College men’s basketball team Saturday evening.
WSC took on Concordia-Irvine during the CCA Division II Tip-off Classic in Orange California.
The ‘Cats held a 39-28 first half lead but Concordia-Irvine came storming back in the second half thanks to a 47-34 scoring clip. Concordia-Irvine edged Wayne State 75-73 to improve to 2-0 while WSC fell to 0-2.
Nick Ferrarini paced the Wildcats on the court with 23 points on 10-19 shooting from the field (2-5 3PT/1-2 FT) while adding three rebounds and a steal. Jordan Janssen recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to go along with six assists. Ben Dentlinger (seven boards) and Al’Tavius Jackson (six boards) both finished with nine points.
Other scoring came from Nate Mohr (eight points), Henry Penner (four), Nate Thayer (three) and Isiah Bud (two).
WSC shot 30-68 (44.1%) from the floor, 6-15 (40%) from behind the arc and 7-12 (58.3%) from the foul line.
The ‘Cats scored 38 points in the paint, 20 points from 17 offensive rebounds, 11 points off 11 turnovers forced, nine bench points and four fast break points. WSC played to a pair of ties and three lead changes with their largest lead coming early in the second half (19:28) at 13 points.
Wayne State will close out the CCA Division II Tip-off Classic Sunday evening against Texas Permian Basin.
