Wayne Pony Baseball Teams Dominate Opponents

HOWELLS/WAYNE – After a week off from competition in the Tri County League, the Wayne White and Blue Pony youth baseball teams returned to the diamond.

From the Summer Sports Complex in Wayne, the White Ponies took control early against North Bend Central to win 20-8 while Wayne Blue scored back-to-back five-run innings late to defeat Howells/Dodge in Howells, 15-4 Wednesday night.

In Wayne, Wayne White improved to 3-1 after opening the game with two runs in the first and seven more in the second. Wayne White outscored North Bend, 6-2 in the third, both teams scored five runs in the fourth as NBC added one more run in the top of the fifth but lost, 20-8.

Four players recorded three hits each of the team’s 15 led by Gavin Redden with a homerun, two singles, four RBI and four runs scored. Other three hit performances came from Parker Patefield and Carter Wiese both with three RBI and three runs scored as Zander Liston drove in two runs and scored three times.

Austin Heiser doubled, and drove a run; Calvin Ankeny singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Mason Karsky singled and drove in three runs; Taven Ocampo scored twice as Drew Reinhardt and Lance Stange both scored.

Calvin Ankeny (53 pitches) secured the win in three innings allowing two runs off one hit while striking out six batters and walking two. Reinhardt (37 pitches) worked an inning allowing five runs (one earned) off one hit while striking out one batter and walking four. Patefield (11 pitches) pitched the final inning allowing one run off one hit while striking out two batters.

On the road, Wayne Blue scored two runs in the top of the second while both teams added a run in the third. Wayne Blue posted a two-run fourth and five runs in the fifth to lead 10-1 before finishing the game outscoring Howells/Dodge, 5-3 in the sixth to win 15-4. The Wayne Blue Ponies improved to 2-2.

Mason Heikes was the top performer with four singles and six RBI while Gavin Anderson singled twice, doubled, drove in three runs and scored four times as Kaden Keller singled twice, doubled, drove in two runs and scored four times. Will Leseberg also singled three times, drove in a run and scored three times.

Samuel Etter singled, drove in a run and scored; Jace Jorgensen scored twice as Keegan Rubendall also scored.

Keller (91 pitches) secured the win in five and two-thirds allowing four runs off five hits while striking out 11 batters and walking one. Heikes came in for the final out in one pitch being a groundout.

The Pony Tournament Team is 2-1 and next travels to the Spencer Slugfest Tournament in Spencer, Iowa this weekend. The team will open against Carroll at 12:30 p.m. before also facing SC Futures Bremer at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 5.

Tri County League teams will return next week with Wayne White visiting Wakefield on Sunday, June 6 at 7 p.m. and Wayne Blue hosting Tekamah-Herman on Monday, June 7 at 7 p.m.

 

The Wayne Blue Didgets and Broncos will be in action this evening visiting Emerson-Hubbard at 6/7:45 p.m. while the Wayne White Didgets and Broncos will host Bancroft/Lyons also at 6/7:45 p.m. tonight.
