Wayne Didget Teams To Meet Up Friday, Ponies Advance To League Championship Game

WAYNE/WEST POINT – The Wayne didget teams have set up a semi-final showdown against one another while the Wayne ponies have moved one step closer to a league championship.

Wednesday evening featured the 2019 didget and pony Tri-County League youth baseball tournaments.

In the didget division #5 Wayne blue won at #4 West Point Patriots, 5-3. The blues improved to 13-1 on the season.

For the top-seeded Wayne whites, they defeated #9 Tekamah purple, 5-2. The whites are now 13-0 overall.

Brody Munter recorded a single, double, triple and scored twice for Wayne white while Mason Heikes added a single, triple, RBI and run scored. Jaxson Kneifl singled and drove in a run; Blake Smith singled, doubled and scored as Callen Gamble scored.

Jaxson Kneifl started the opening three innings allowing one hit while striking out nine of 10 batters faced. Mason Heikes closed out the final three innings allowing two runs off six hits while striking out five batters.

It’ll be a Wayne white vs. blue showdown Friday night at 6 p.m. in Hooper. On the other half of the bracket, #3 Schuyler Green shutout #6 Pierce (5-0) while #7 Howells/Dodge edged #18 Pender white 9-8.

 

During the pony division, #3 Wayne won against the #2-seeded West Point Patriots 9-2 in the semi-finals played in Pender.

Calvin Starzl posted a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh and singled while James Dorcey singled twice and doubled twice for Wayne. Dom Dominguez doubled twice, Cooper Zara singled and doubled as Yair Alcantara singled twice.

Wyatt Heikes picked up the win in six innings allowing two runs off four hits while striking out 16 batters and walking two. Yair Alcantara closed out the final inning striking out two of three batters faced.

#1 Pierce blue dominated #4 Oakland-Craig 20-2 as the pony consolation game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday between Oakland/Craig and West Point Patriots. Wayne and Pierce blue will meet in the championship game at 7:45 p.m. in Pender. Wayne’s lone lost came at the hands of Pierce blue (19-0) on May 6.

 

The quarterfinals of the tri-co bronco division will eliminate one Wayne team as #3 Wayne blue will face #6 Wayne white from the Summer Sports Complex this evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. according to the league website.

The winner will face the winner of either #7 Columbus Lakeview or #2 Pender Red in the semi’s while the top half of the bracket will feature #5 Pender white vs. #13 Stanton and #1 Oakland-Craig white vs. #9 West Point Yankees.
