Blue Devil Softball Outlasts Arlington During Home Invite

WAYNE – After getting past their opening round and semifinal games, the Wayne High softball team was tested in the championship contest.

Over the weekend, WHS hosted the Wayne Softball Invite from the summer sports complex Saturday.

In the first round, Wayne outscored Ord 10-1 before winning 10-0 over Highway 91. It then took until the top of the eighth for a one-run victory over Arlington to seal off the home invitational win to now sit 4-0 on the season.

During the win against Ord, WHS brought in a run during the first before scoring four more in the second to lead 5-0. Ord scored their lone run in the third as Wayne drove in three more runs during the fourth and two in the fifth to win 10-1.

Brooklyn Kruse singled twice and drove in a pair of runs while Kendall Dorey doubled for Wayne. Tori Kniesche and Kayla Fleming both accounted for a RBI as Ord committed four defensive errors.

Kendall Dorey picked up the win in five innings allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out eight batters and walking four.

From the shutout victory over Highway 91, Wayne scored nine of their runs in the first before bringing in the final run in the bottom of the third.

Fleming doubled and drove in three runs for Wayne as Tori Kniesche and Kendall Dorey both singled and drove in a run. Hope O’Reilly added two RBI while Brianna Nissen and Amara Hurlbert both accounted for a RBI.

Tori Kniesche picked up the win in four innings allowing one hit while striking out 11 batters.

In the championship game, both Wayne and Arlington were at a stale mate seven innings through. It took extras with the Blue Devils scoring in the top of the eighth and holding off the Eagles in the bottom half to win 1-0.

Tori Kniesche tripled and drove in the lone run being Dorey for Wayne. Brianna Nissen singled twice while O’Reilly and Dorey added a single.

Tori Kniesche picked up the win in eight innings allowing two hits while striking out 22 batters.

The Wayne High softball team will next visit O’Neill on Tuesday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles recently went 1-1 during the York Quad with a 13-1 loss to York and won 4-3 over Grand Island Central Catholic to sit 2-1 on the year.
