Wayne Girls Drop Seventh Straight, Blue Devil Boys Win Fourth In A Row

ALBION – After playing single games throughout the week, the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams took part in their first doubleheader of 2020 over the weekend.

From Boone Central/Newman Grove high school in Albion, the Blue Devils visited the Cardinals Saturday.

During the girls game, Boone Central/Newman Grove handed Wayne High their seventh straight loss of the season with a 53-36 final. The Cardinals improve to 6-6 while WHS fell to 4-9.

Brooklyn Kruse led Wayne High in scoring with 22 points and eight rebounds while Frankie Klausen added nine points. Emily Longe and Rubie Klausen (five rebounds) both scored two points and Madi Urbanec finished with a point.

 

From the boys game, Wayne High took the 12-3 first quarter lead while holding to a 14-13 second quarter advantage. WHS went up 26-16 at the half. Boone Central/Newman Grove started to mount a comeback with a 17-12 third quarter before the Blue Devils outscored the Cardinals 19-16 in the fourth. Final saw Wayne High win 57-49 to improve to 8-5 and win their fourth straight as BC/NG fell to 3-9.

The win also marked the 100th career win for coach Rob Sweetland.

Tyrus Eischeid scored 20 points and nine rebounds to pace Wayne High in scoring followed by Shea Sweetland with 11 points. Tanner Walling added nine points, Trevor DeBoer tacked on seven points and seven rebounds, Josh Lutt (three assists) and Cody Rogers both scored four points and Noah Lutt finished with two points.

The Cardinals were led by Blaine Young with 11 points as Logan Hodges and Doug Anderson (six rebounds) both scored 10 points.

Wayne High will next host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Tuesday, January 14. The game will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with pregame coverage set for 6 p.m. Girls contest is scheduled to tip-off at 6:15 p.m. with the boys to follow.
