A 25-year-old woman with limited mobility died Thursday after becoming caught in an elevator in a Papillion-area home, fire officials said.
Asha Chaudhuri was unconscious and trapped between the decking of the elevator and the main floor of the home when rescue personnel arrived, according to the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies and the Papillion Fire Department were called to the newer home southwest of 120th Street and Nebraska Highway 370 at 12:57 p.m.
While medics attended to Chaudhuri, fire crews worked to free her, officials said.
Using extrication equipment, they freed her in about 20 minutes.
Chaudhuri was taken by ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in critical condition.
She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Chaudhuri had special needs and used the elevator to move between floors of the home.
The elevator normally traveled between the basement and the main floor.
