Utah woman killed in Pottawattamie County collision Monday morning

A Utah woman was killed Monday morning after a semitrailer truck rear-ended the car she was in near Walnut, Iowa.

Antonieta Altamirano Serrano, 50, of Bountiful, Utah, died.

The other people in the car, 46-year-old Reina Leiva de Lucero and 38-year-old Melvin Rigoberto Diaz Portillo, both of Gaithersburg, Maryland, were injured and taken to a hospital.

Portillo was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata east on Interstate 80 near Walnut, in northeast Pottawattamie County, the Iowa State Patrol said. Portillo was driving slowly “for unknown reasons,” authorities said, when the car was rear-ended by a semi driven by Jeffrey Charles Thomas, 59, of Silver City, Iowa. Thomas was not injured.

All of the occupants of the Sonata were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
