Pedestrian struck, killed along I-680 early Monday

A pedestrian was struck and killed early Monday along Interstate 680 on the northern edge of Omaha.

The driver of a Peterbilt semitrailer truck called Douglas County 911 dispatchers around 4:40 a.m., saying he had struck a person along westbound I-680 near the 60th Street underpass.

Police said their investigation found that the pedestrian entered the path of the truck from the westbound, outside shoulder just east of 60th Street.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports from the scene said the person may have been carrying a flashlight while walking along I-680.

Authorities blocked westbound I-680 at 48th Street shortly after the body was found. Westbound motorists were detoured off the Interstate onto 48th Street.

The westbound lanes reopened around 8:30 a.m.

The death was the sixth fatality on the Interstate system in two days. Five people were killed Sunday in three crashes on I-80 between Lincoln and York.
