No injuries reported in collision between train and State Patrol cruiser

A Nebraska State Patrol cruiser was totaled after the vehicle was struck by a train while high-centered on tracks in Scotts Bluff County.

Icy conditions contributed to the collision, which occurred about 7 p.m. Saturday as the trooper approached Highway 92 from a county road, according to the State Patrol.

The collision occurred after the officer lost control of his vehicle as it slid on ice while approaching a T intersection. According to the Patrol and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, the cruiser slid through the intersection, across a ditch and came to a stop on the tracks.

The patrolman was able to get out of the vehicle before a train arrived and struck the cruiser. The tracks belong to Union Pacific Railroad.

No one was injured. The Scotts Bluff Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash and the State Patrol is conducting an internal review.

Snowy conditions in Nebraska caused trouble for a number of drivers. According to the Patrol, troopers performed nearly 125 motorist assists on Saturday.
