Fire destroys one barn, damages two others in Sarpy County

Crews from six fire departments teamed up Saturday evening to douse a Sarpy County fire that destroyed a barn and had spread to two adjacent ones near Nebraska Highway 370 and 60th Street.

No fire hydrants were in the area, so tanker trucks had to provide water, said Battalion Chief Brian O’Shea of the Papillion Fire Department. Fire departments from Springfield, Bellevue, Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha and Waterloo also responded.

No livestock died, and firefighters were able to save the two adjacent barns, O’Shea said. The owner was not at the property at the time.

Passersby apparently reported the fire at 7:22 p.m.

The fire’s thick, black smoke could be seen for miles.

The blaze caused an estimated $50,000 to $60,000 in damage, O’Shea said. The cause was still under investigation.
