A Douglas County corrections officer suspected of stealing more than $170,000 from his union has been charged with three felonies.
Sgt. Daniel Glazebrook, 43, who was the union’s treasurer, is charged with theft from Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 8. He also is charged with forgery and unauthorized use of a financial transaction device.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office arrested Glazebrook about 4 p.m. Wednesday in Papillion.
The Lodge 8 executive board recently discovered unusual transactions and missing funds from the F.O.P. bank account, the Sheriff’s Office said. A review of documents indicated that Glazebrook had been embezzling funds for the past three years, officials said.
The business address of F.O.P. Lodge 8 is in Sarpy County, which is why the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, officials said.
Glazebrook made his first court appearance Thursday. Sarpy County Judge Robert C. Wester ordered Glazebrook held on $100,000 bail and appointed the Sarpy County Public Defender’s Office to represent him.
A Douglas County spokeswoman said the Department of Corrections is aware of the allegations against Glazebrook. “This matter does not involve any taxpayer dollars or funds belonging to inmates housed at the Douglas County Department of Corrections,” Leia Baez said in a prepared statement. “As a result of the ongoing criminal investigation, Sgt. Glazebrook has been placed on administrative leave.”
Noting that his office was just appointed Thursday, Sarpy County Public Defender Tom Strigenz said his office is just beginning its work on the case.
“Mr. Glazebrook is innocent until the state puts enough evidence on” to prove he is guilty, Strigenz said.
Asked what measures were being taken to ensure Glazebrook’s safety in jail, Strigenz said that concern had been raised and is being addressed. He said he couldn’t discuss details, but “the Sarpy County Jail staff will always keep their inmates safe.”
