Damage caused by vandals at Lincoln elementary school will cost $10,000 to repair

The damage vandals left behind early Tuesday at a Lincoln elementary school will cost an estimated $10,000 to repair, school officials said.

A fire alarm that went off about 3 a.m. at Roper Elementary School, 2323 S. Coddington Ave., led Lincoln police officers and firefighters to the school. They found several broken windows, clocks, displays, fixtures and vending machines, police said.

It’s not clear how the vandals gained access to the building.

Staff were told not to report to the building Tuesday because of the cleanup work underway, Roper Principal Lynn Fuller said in a note to parents. The work was expected to be completed Tuesday afternoon.

The school was continuing with its ice cream social Tuesday night, weather permitting, while Wednesday’s summer school classes will continue as scheduled.

People near the school with video surveillance are asked to call Lincoln police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600. The school is near Southwest 23rd and West South Streets.
