Authorities identify 2 who were killed in Seward County crash caused by ice on Interstate 80

Two people who were killed Friday in a Seward County crash caused by ice on Interstate 80 have been identified.

Kadar Mohamed, 30, and a passenger, Maryan Serar, 58, both of Grand Island, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the Seward County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators determined that Mohamed was driving a pickup truck east on I-80 near Utica about 11:20 a.m. when the vehicle hit a patch of ice and lost control. The pickup went through the median and collided with a westbound semitrailer truck.

Both vehicles went down an embankment and caught fire. The driver of the semi, who was not identified, was taken to Seward Memorial Hospital for a head injury and was later released.
