An 8-year-old boy who was struck by a school bus Monday afternoon has died of his injuries, his mother said.

The boy was hit by the bus on Sprague Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets, just north of the King Science and Technology Magnet School.

“He’s always smiling. He never, ever stops smiling,” the child’s mother, Amina Khamis, said Monday evening.

Omaha Police Sgt. Chuck Casey said the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. The child was transported by ambulance to Nebraska Medical Center with “pretty significant injuries,” he said.

Khamis Khamis, 35, the child’s uncle, said he believes his nephew was struck by the bus when he crossed the street in front of it.

Khamis described his nephew as funny and playful and said he liked to play with his eight siblings. He was born in the United States into a family of Kenyan immigrants.

The crash was reported at 4:52 p.m. Monday. Sprague Street remained blocked off Monday evening as police investigated.

Casey said investigators will be interviewing the male bus driver, who drives for Student Transportation of America.

OPS spokeswoman Monique Farmer said the boy is a second-grader at Springville Elementary, located near 60th and Girard Streets.

“At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident,” Farmer said in a statement. “Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student. We will provide an update once more information is available, and can be shared.”
