5-year-old boy injured Tuesday in crash on eastbound I-80 has died

A 5-year-old boy who was critically injured Tuesday in a crash on Interstate 80 in Omaha has died.

The boy, Cameron Philpott of Omaha, suffered a head injury in the crash. He had been secured in the back of a 2006 Honda Accord in an approved child seat, police said.

Police said the Honda and a semitrailer truck were involved in the crash around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-80 just west of 72nd Street.

According to a witness, the Accord was eastbound when it began to spin because of icy conditions, police said. The Honda was struck in the rear by the semi, which was eastbound behind the Accord, police said.

The driver of the Honda, Cory Phillips, 28, of Omaha, was not injured, police said.

The driver of the semi, Vitalii Zadorozhnyi, 31, of Irvine, California, also was not injured.

Phillips said Wednesday that it was too early to talk about what happened.

The boy was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in extremely critical condition, with CPR in progress. He later was transferred to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he later died.

An autopsy has been scheduled, police said Wednesday.

All lanes of eastbound I-80 at the crash site were closed and eastbound motorists were detoured at 84th Street and onto northbound I-680 at the split with I-80 while authorities investigated the crash.
