Funeral Services for Merlin Saul, age 88, of Wayne, will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne on Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with family present. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne. He passed away on Saturday at Wayne Country View Care. Memorials may be directed to the Grace Lutheran Church Roof Fund. Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.
Merlin Dean Saul was born April 1, 1931, on a farm southeast of Wayne to Otto and Elsie (Baker) Saul. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He attended Country School District #26 in Wayne County and graduated from Wayne High School in 1948. Merlin married Kathryn (Kay) Retzlaff December 22, 1950, at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. The couple farmed south of Wayne for many years. As a member of Grace Lutheran Church, he served on various church boards and was a former member of Wayne County District #10 School Board. Merlin enjoyed playing bingo and cards, and square dancing with Kay. The couple enjoyed Wayne State Volleyball and Basketball. They never missed a game as long as their health allowed. Merlin’s passion in life was his family and farming.
Merlin is survived by his son, Roger (Elaine) Saul of Wayne; son-in-law, Roger Madden of Lincoln; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Lorraine (Larry) Johnson of Wayne; nieces and nephews.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn (Kay), March 13, 2018 and a daughter, Debora Madden, March 14, 1995.
