Joyce Evonne Pippitt, 87 years of age, of Wayne, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at the Careage Campus of Care in Wayne. Joyce was born on July 18, 1931 to Harold and Ardyce Sorensen, the oldest of three children. The family lived on a farm northwest of Wayne, where she helped keep her two little brothers out of mischief. Joyce graduated from Wayne Prep School in 1948 and received her degree in Home Economics from Wayne State College in 1952. After teaching a year at Ute, IA she returned and was united in marriage to Donald G. Pippitt on August 20, 1953. To this union a son Richard (Rick) was born in 1955 and a daughter Jeanne Ann in 1956. The family made their home on the Pippitt home place where Don and Joyce lived for 44 years. Whether cooking up some creature Rick brought home for supper or sewing Jeanne Ann’s Easter dress, she still found time to be a help-mate for Don. She substitute-taught in Laurel for many years until shortly after the unfortunate passing of their son Rick in 1977.
As a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Wayne, her faith was at the forefront of her life and sustained her through difficult times. Joyce was always willing to serve and could usually be found in the church kitchen. Her many interests included creating photo albums for immediate family (somewhere over 120 albums), woodworking projects including many tables, gardening, baking, painting pictures, sewing, and reading all newspapers.
In 1997 Don and Joyce moved into Wayne where they enjoyed many friendships and following their grandchildren’s activities. The entire family treasured their time together at the red cabin in Walker Valley. Due to health concerns with Parkinson’s disease, in 2012 Joyce moved into the Careage, where Don soon joined her. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years on July 21, 2012, son Rick; parents; step-mother Helen Craig Sorensen; and brother Richard (Dick) Sorensen; brothers-in-law Dean Pippitt and Lawrence Hansen, sisters-in-law Marsha Sorensen, Frances Hansen, Penny Craig Culpepper, and nephew David Sorensen.
Joyce leaves to celebrate her life her daughter Jeanne Ann (Dan) Kardell; grandchildren Dena (Daniel) Lipp, Laurel; Shaun (Jessica) Kardell, Gretna; Jenessa Kardell, Wayne; and great-grandchildren Vincent Lipp, Ada Lipp, and Selena Kardell. She ls also survived by her brother Dean Sorensen, Inman, SC; sisters-in-law Judy Sorensen, Wayne; Norma Pippitt, Wayne, step-brothers Harold (Sandra Ann Craig), Winchester Center, CT; Gary (Donna) Craig, Spanaway, WA; Carey Culpepper, Ocala, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
