Funeral Services for Genevieve Carmichael, age 94, of Wayne, will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be at Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne on Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with family present. Interment will be at National Cemetery in Spencer, NE. She passed away on Monday at her home at Brookdale-Wayne. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.
Genevieve Gwendolyn Carmichael was born March 8, 1924, near Spencer to Vaclav and Julia (Vanorney) Jiracek. Following her graduation from Spencer High School, Genevieve worked in Grand Island at the Nebraska Ordinance Plant, filling bombs with T.N.T. She later worked in Hood River, OR at a fruit cannery. Genevieve returned to Spencer where she met her future husband, Gerald. They were married March 17, 1946, at the Kountze Memorial Church in Omaha. The couple moved to Spencer and opened a bakery when rolls were 40 cents a dozen and bread 15 cents a loaf. Later, they moved to Wayne where Gerald worked at Bradford’s Bakery and later the City of Wayne Light Plant. Genevieve worked at Wayne Public Schools Cafeteria for many years. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and a volunteer at the Wayne Senior Center for numerous years.
Genevieve is survived by her sons, Garlin (Pat) Carmichael of Alta, IA and Curtis (Michele) Carmichael of Lakewood, CO; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald in 1981; five brothers and sisters, George (Marcelin) Jiracek, Vlasta (Loren) Dickey, Silvia (Lorin) Bremwich, Elsie (Don) Barr, and Vincent Jiracek.
