WSC Women’s Golf Takes Fourth During Wildcat Classic

WAYNE – A two-day outing closed out Monday afternoon for the Wayne State College women’s golf team.

The Wildcats remained in the fourth-place spot to finish the event just outside the top three by 10 strokes with a two-day total of 665 during the 2021 Wildcat Classic.

After enjoying near perfect conditions on Sunday where the Wildcats set a new school record shooting a 323, WSC and all other teams in the tournament braved windy and chilly conditions at the Wayne Country Club where the feels like temperature to start the round was in the upper 30’s.

Nebraska-Kearney edged Augustana 624-632 for the team title with Concordia-St. Paul in third at 655.  Wayne State placed fourth at 665 followed by Concordia (Neb.) with 670, Bemidji State shot 695, York College 697 and Mount Marty 734.

The individual medalist for the meet was Faviola Gonzalez of Nebraska-Kearney with a six-over par 150 after shooting rounds of 70 and 80 on the final day. Augustana’s Molly Stevens was second at +11 with scores of 72 and 83 for a 155.

Wayne State’s top finishers were freshman Abbey Kurmel and sophomore Paige Peters, who both tied for 11th overall at 163.  Kurmel posted scores of 79 and 84 while Peters shot 78 and 85 on Monday.

Freshman Jazmine Taylor tied for 17th place with a 165 (81-84) while freshman Tricia Hemann was 26th overall with a 174 shooting rounds of 85 and 89.

The Wayne State College women’s golf team will next compete in the Augustana Spring Invitational at Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this Saturday and Sunday. WSC will also participate in the NSIC Championships Thursday, April 22 – Sunday, April 25 in Morton, Minnesota.
