AUBURNDALE, FL – After dropping six straight games in the Drury Tournament last time out, the Wayne State College softball team hit to the road for a series of spring games.
From Auburndale, Florida, the Wildcat softball team opened their National Training Center (NTC) spring break trip Sunday.
WSC suffered a pair of losses from a 4-3 game to California University (PA) and 6-4 loss to Dominican College (N.Y.). Wayne State has now dropped nine straight to sit 5-12 on the season and will next face Ferris State at 1:45 p.m. as well as Edinboro (PA) at 4 p.m. Monday.
In the loss to California (PA), Ashley Hernandez recorded a two-run homer as Kim Vidlak and Molli Vasa both doubled and scored. Kortney Buresh singled and drove in a run while Emily Hale singled.
Sloan Cooksey suffered the loss in four innings allowing three earned runs off three hits while walking four batters and striking out one. Hadley Chvatal started the opening three innings allowing an earned run off two hits while walking four batters, hitting one and striking out another two.
During the loss to Dominican College (N.Y.), Hernandez recorded another homerun finishing with two RBI as Buresh singled, doubled, scored and drove in a run. Vidlak and Hale singled twice while Clare Reinhart and Paiton Tornberg both singled. Vasa also scored.
Chvatal suffered the loss in an inning allowing four runs (two earned) off one hit while walking three batters and striking out one. Cooksey worked the final five innings allowing two runs off three hits while striking out seven batters as well as walking and hitting two each.
Other games for WSC include a Wednesday double header against Slippery Rock (PA) at 9 a.m. and Urbana (Ohio) at 11:15 a.m. Wayne State will then close out the trip against Pittsburgh at Johnstown at 9 a.m. Thursday followed by Malone (Ohio) at 11:15 a.m. The NSIC opener for WSC will be played on Tuesday, March 24 hosting Augustana at 1/3 p.m. from the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
