VERMILLION, SD – From NCAA provisional marks being met in throwing events to a new school record, members of the Wayne State College women’s and men’s outdoor track & field team performed well over the weekend.

According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, WSC competed at the South Dakota Track and Field Invite which was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Vermillion, South Dakota. The meet attracted numerous Division I teams, along with NSIC schools Sioux Falls, Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State and a variety of NAIA and NCAA Division III schools.

The Wildcat women were led by junior Brooklynn Chipps who recorded an NCAA provisional and personal best mark in the hammer throw along with an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put.

Chipps, a graduate of Clearwater HS, hit an NCAA provisional and personal best mark in the hammer throw at 197’ 11” to finish second in a strong field of NCAA Division I throwers in the event. Her throw now ranks #2 in the NSIC and #3 in NCAA Division II.  She also finished seventh in the shot put at 46’ 1 ½”, another NCAA provisional mark.

Graduate student Mckenzie Scheil collected a fourth place finish in the hammer throw at 189’ 1 ¾” while senior Allie Rosener was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:45.05.  Sophomore hurdler Megan Hansen also had a fourth place finish in the 100-meter hurdle finals in 14.51 seconds.

The Wildcat 4 x 100 meter relay team of Emily Erickson, Sarah Cotton, Emily Smollen and Maya Couch came in fourth place in 50.40 seconds.

Smollen placed fifth in the triple jump at 38’ 0” while Keyla Sambo was ninth at 37’ 5 ¾”.

Kendra Paasch earned a ninth place finish in the shot put (44’ 1 ½”) and Reilly Young was 10th in the discus with a mark of 146’ 11 ¾”.


Freshman Logan Moeller set a new school record in the long jump to lead the Wayne State men.

The Pierce native, posted the new school record on his first jump of the day, winning the long jump at 25’ 2”. The previous school record of 24’ 7 ½” was held by Derek Lahm and set in the 2018 season (3/30/18). Moeller also finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 47’ ¼”.

Cole Christoffersen hit an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw, surpassing the 200 foot mark with a toss of 200’ 7 1/2”.  Nathan Pearson was fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:55.31.

Sophomore and Wayne native Cody Rogers posted a pair of seventh place finishes in the long jump (22’ 4 ½”) and triple jump (44’ 1 ½”).

Noah Lilly was eighth in the 110-meter hurdle finals in 15.47 seconds, Dylan Kneifl came in eighth in the long jump (22’ 3 ¾”), Braden Johnson was ninth in the long jump (22’ 1 ¾”) and Brandon Mundorf placed 10th in the 1500-meter run at 4:05.25.

The Wayne State College women’s and men’s track & field team will send most of its men’s team to Lincoln on Thursday during the Prairie Wolf Invite at Nebraska Wesleyan while several others qualified and will compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, IA on Friday and Saturday.
