WSC Baseball Splits At Ranked Opponent

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Following a mid-week cancellation in late April, the Wayne State College baseball team opened the month of May with their final road series of the year.

From Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, WSC visited #16 Augustana University Saturday afternoon.

With mirrored scores, Augie won the opening game while Wayne State College won the second game, both scores of 7-1. WSC snapped an eight-game losing streak with the split now 11-20 (10-17 NSIC) while the Vikings are 27-9 (23-9 NSIC).

After WSC scored a run in the top of the first, Augustana rattled off seven straight. They included single runs in the second and third as well as a five-run fifth to win 7-1.

CJ Neumann singled and doubled as Peyton Barnes singled twice for WSC. Brenden Madsen recorded a solo homerun while singles came from Alex Logelin, Andrew Hanson and Bryce Bisenius.

Brody Sintek (2-3) suffered the loss in four and two-thirds allowing five runs (four earned) off three hits while striking out three batters, walking two and hitting two. Andrew Staebell worked a third of an inning allowing two earned runs off three hits while striking out one batter. Josh Yelick came in for the final inning allowing one hit while striking out and walking one batter each.

During the second game, WSC again scored early with a run in the first. The ‘Cats poured in four more runs in the fourth, both teams scored a run in the seventh as WSC scored once more in the eighth to win 7-1.

Andrew Hanson dominated at the plate with a three-run home run and a solo shot while Bisenius singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice for WSC. Barnes singled twice, Logelin singled and scored twice, Noah Roberts singled and drove in a run, Madsen singled and scored as Neumann singled.

Hunter Wienhoff (2-3) picked up the complete game win allowing an earned run off eight hits while striking out eight batters and hitting one.

The Wayne State College baseball team will close out the three-game series at Augustana on Sunday, May 2 at noon.
