Winside, Wayne Wrestling Teams Go Two, Three In Standings

 

WAYNE – The annual Wayne High wrestling invite was held Saturday throughout the morning and into the afternoon where 10 varsity teams and one JV team competed for the top spot.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School Gym, mats were placed across the floor as wrestlers battled for the medal stand. This marked the second of five home contests hosted by the Blue Devil wrestling program this year.

Teams standings saw Schuyler pull away from the field with 240 points to win the invite. Winside then edged Wayne by a .5 point (148.5-148) for second, Elkhorn placed fourth with 120 points and Stanton rounded out the top five teams with 102.5 points.

Other scores came from Wisner-Pilger (sixth – 43), Crofton-Bloomfield (seventh – 42), Scribner-Snyder (eighth – 39), Schuyler JV (ninth – 24), Clarkston/Leigh (10th – 22) and BRLD (11th – 11).

Top results from Winside came from Jacoby Mann (106) and Cayden Ellis (113) who recorded first place marks. Koby Ellis (120), Art Escalante (138), Alex Carlson (145) and Michael Jensen (195) finished runner-up, Gabe Escalante (120) took third as Matthew Frederick (126) and Dominic Reed (152) tacked on a pair of fourth place results.

Wayne’s top wrestlers were Cameron Muhs (132), Juan Vergara (138) and Mike Leatherdale (285) winning  their respective weight classes. Reece Jaqua (126), Edwin Espino (152), Reid Korth (160) and Dakota Spann (182) all placed second and Angel Sanchez (182) finished fifth.

The Wayne High wrestlers are off until Tuesday, December 18 when they visit Boone Central/Newman Grove for a triangular with Plainview prior to the holiday break. Other home duals include hosting Battle Creek on Thursday, January 10 and Winside on Tuesday, January 22 before being the host for the Mid State Conference Invite on Thursday, January 31.
