Winside Volleyball Sweeps One Opponent, Drops Two Other Matches During Weekend Tourney

DODGE – Following an opening night sweep victory last week, the Winside Wildcat volleyball program continued their early season schedule into a round robin weekend tournament.

From Dodge, Howells-Dodge welcomed in Hartington-Newcastle, Randolph and Winside.

Winside suffered an opening match loss to the host Howells-Dodge (25-13, 25-17); defeated Hartington-Newcastle (25-10, 25-21) before falling to Randolph in three sets to close out Saturday (25-23, 17-25, 25-16). Winside is now 2-2 on the season.

In the first loss to Howells-Dodge, Hope Cummins paced Winside at the net with five kills while adding three digs and a solo block. Brooklyn Behmer tallied three kills, five set assists, an ace and two digs; McKenna Russell added two kills, three set assists, an ace and four digs as Kati Topp finished with two kills and an ace. Jackie Escalante totaled three set assists, an ace and four digs while Ashelyn Abler paced the team in digs with eight.

During the lone victory over HNS, Cummins had four kills, three solo blocks, an ace and six digs while Topp added four kills, two set assists, two solo blocks and a dig. Behmer finished with three kills, a team-high nine set assists, an ace and a dig; Russell totaled three kills, two set assists, a solo block, an ace and five digs as Abler recorded seven digs.

Closing out the round robin tourney with Randolph, Behmer went off for nine kills, eight set assist, eight digs and two aces while Topp finished with five kills, five solo blocks, two aces and three digs for Winside. Escalate tallied 13 digs and four set assists as Russell recorded two kills, three set assists, an ace and seven digs. Cummins also had five solo blocks to go along with an ace and seven digs.

The Winside Wildcat volleyball program will next compete in a pair of road triangulars. Winside will face St. Mary’s of O’Neill in Plainview on Tuesday, September 1 and visit Wausa on Thursday, September 3 while also competing against Elkhorn Valley.
