WINSIDE – With a total of five triangulars listed on the Winside volleyball schedule, the Wildcats hosted their first of two, Tuesday evening.
From Winside Public Schools, Winside welcomed in St. Mary’s of O’Neill and Plainview.
Winside secured their first win of the season with a sweep against St. Mary’s (25-22, 25-21) but suffered a loss in straight sets against Plainview (19-25, 22-25). The Wildcats are now 1-5 on the season.
In the third match, Plainview won in three sets over St. Mary’s (25-16, 17-25, 28-26) to improve to 2-4 while St. Mary’s of O’Neill fell to 1-3.
In the victory against St. Mary’s, McKenna Russell recorded a team-high six kills and nine set assists to go along with six digs while Natalie Kruger followed with five kills, eight set assists and eight digs. Carsan Brogren had four kills and six digs; Micah Stenwall tallied three kills and two digs as Hannah Gubbels paced the team in digs with 14 and had two kills. Sam Gubbels also had double figure digs with 10.
Service aces came from Hannah Gubbels and Russell each with one.
During the loss to Plainview, Russell recorded seven kills, seven set assists and seven digs as Kruger followed with three kills, seven set assists, six digs and a service ace for Winside. Hannah Gubbels tallied a team-high nine digs with two kills; Carsan Brogren had seven digs with three service aces and two kills as Stenwall finished with two kills.
Solo blocks came from Skye Schultz, Brogren and Stenwall all with one.
The Winside volleyball team will next compete in the Elkhorn Valley triangular with Wausa on Thursday, September 2.
