Winside Girls Basketball Looking To Keep Intensity Up Throughout Season

WINSIDE – With a late November Jamboree game scheduled for the Winside girls basketball team, the Wildcats will look to showcase high intensity each time they step on the court.

A smaller team will make up Winside girls basketball at 11 but will return a handful of starters.

Winside girls basketball will be moving into year number four under the direction of coach Devin Gnat.

Coach Gnat said the team has been working on keeping the intensity up in practice.

“Trying to make sure that we’re playing fast,” said Gnat. “We’re working on press break because we’ve struggled with that in the past just breaking the press against teams. Then kind of working on giving teams a different look defensively. So, being able to play different types of defenses.”

Joining coach Gnat on staff will be Teresa Watters.

Last year, Winside girls basketball finished 5-17.

With only one senior graduating, coach Gnat is excited to have Hannah Gubbels back entering her senior year along with several other key returners.

“Natalie Kruger coming back, she’s going to be a starting post for us,” Gnat added. “Samantha Gubbels she started a little bit as a freshman last year. Elayna Hoskinson, she started throughout the year kind of on and off last year, we’ve got Skye Schultz she did get some varsity minutes and then we’ve got Reagan Strong she started off and on last year and got some good varsity minutes.”

A couple freshmen joining the team will be Anslee Watters and Aubrey Russell who will see significant varsity minutes along with Jerzi Carlson.

Winside is scheduled to visit Omaha Nation on Monday, November 28 during a Jamboree outing starting with the girls game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys competition.

Coach Gnat mentioned the Winside girls basketball team will look forward to playing their game.

“We’re not necessarily going to look to push the ball a whole lot,” Gnat mentioned. “I feel like sometimes teams try to speed us a little bit up to get us out of our game. So, I’m just hoping that we can slow it down and just play our basketball instead of getting out of character and going too fast.”

The Winside girls basketball team will open their season hosting Plainview on Thursday, December 1 before also welcoming in Wynot the following evening on Friday, December 2.
