Wildcat Women Secure Road Split, Wayne State Men Suffer Single Digit Defeat To Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, IA – Both the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams closed out their first NSIC South Division road trip of 2020.

From Dorman gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa Saturday, WSC took on Upper Iowa University for the second time this season.

During the women’s contest, the ‘Cats took the early 14-13 lead in the first before adding to their lead thanks to a 17-9 second. At the half, WSC led 31-22. Wayne State used a strong third quarter (25-12) while outscoring the Peacocks 22-21 in the fourth. Final saw Wayne State College win 78-55 to improve to 11-5 (6-4 NSIC) as Upper Iowa fell to 2-14 (1-9 NSIC).

Halley Busse paced WSC in scoring with 17 points and three assists (6-10 FG/3-5 3PT/2-4 FT) as Erin Norling added 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals (5-15 FG/0-3 3PT/4-5 FT).

Lauren Zacharias (seven rebounds) and Haley Vesey both scored nine points, Josey Ryan poured in seven points, three assists and two steals, Autumn Mlinar tallied six points, Brittany Bongartz (seven rebounds) and Taylor Wangerin both scored four points, Selena Shady tacked on three points, Amelia Ivester and Kylie Hammer (three assists/two steals) both scored two points and Kassidy Pingel finished with a point. Awoti Akoi recorded two steals.

Wayne State finished 29-66 (43.9%) from the floor, 5-16 (31.3%) from the three-point line and 15-20 (75%) at the charity stripe.

Natalie Dinius paced Upper Iowa in scoring with 17 points.

The Peacocks shot 18-56 (32.1%) from the field, 10-31 (32.3%) from behind the arc and 9-16 (56.3%) at the foul line.


From the men’s game, Wayne State jumped ahead by 11 at the 13:18 mark of the fist half before Upper Iowa went on a 14-0 scoring run to lead by 13 late in the half. At the break, Upper Iowa led 37-35. In the second half, both teams went back and forth while the Peacocks used a 43-38 second half to win 80-73. Upper Iowa is now 9-7 (6-4 NSIC) while the ‘Cats fell to 6-13 (3-7 NSIC).

Three Wildcats poured in double figures led by back-to-back nights of a 20-point performance from Nate Mohr (8-12 FG/4-7 3PT). Nick Ferrarini followed with 18 points (6-10 FG/4-6 3PT/2-2 FT) as Jordan Janssen tallied 17 points (4-6 FG/9-9 FT) to go along with nine rebounds and six assists. Other scoring came from Ben Dentlinger with six points, Henry Penner and Nate Thayer both scored four points as Al’Tavius Jackson and Tramarcus Levi both tallied two points.

Wayne State finished 26-54 (48.1%) from the floor, 8-18 (44.4%) from the three-point line and 13-16 (81.3%) at the charity stripe.

Upper Iowa used five players in double figure scoring led by Jake Hilmer with 15 points, while Joe Smoldt added 13 points, Jareese Williams tallied 11 points as Josh Carter and Lucas Duax both scored 10 points.

The Peacocks shot 28-65 (43.1%) from the field, 11-32 (34.4%) from behind the arc and 13-19 (68.4%) at the foul line.

The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will next host a pair of NSIC North Division teams on Friday and Saturday, January 17-18. WSC will entertain MSU Moorhead on Friday at 5:30/7:30 p.m. while Northern State will play at Rice Auditorium Saturday at 3:30/5:30 p.m.
