Wildcat Women Record 30-Point Fourth To Split Road Weekend

ABERDEEN – After getting behind early by double figure points Saturday, the Wayne State women only trailed at most by six points during game two of the season at Northern State University.

From Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, South Dakota, WSC closed out their cross-division season-opener Sunday.

Wayne State College outscored Northern State by 12 points in the final quarter of play to win 81-73. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

WSC held an 18-17 lead after the opening quarter and then used another one-point advantage in the second, 22-21. Wayne State entered half leading 40-38. Northern State came out strong in the third quarter with a 17-11 quarter before the ‘Cats outscored the Wolves 30-18 in the fourth to win 81-73.

Senior Erin Norling went off for a season-high 28 points on 11-20 shooting from the field (4-10 3PT/2-4 FT) while grabbing six boards and dishing out a team-high five assists. Three other starters recorded double figure scoring from senior Halley Bussey adding 18 points (5-12 FG/2-8 3PT/6-6 FT), junior Autumn Mlinar had 14 points (5-6 FG/4-4 3PT) and senior Brittany Bongartz poured in 13 points (5-9 FT/1-2 3PT/2-4 FT). Sophomore starter Josey Ryan finished with two points and a team-high eight rebounds while adding three assists and two steals.

Other scorers off the bench were junior Kylie Hammer with four points as well as sophomore Awoti Akoi with two points.

Bongartz also finished with six boards and led the team in blocks with two.

WSC shot 29-62 (46.8%) from the field, 11-31 (35.5%) from behind the arc and 12-18 (66.7%) from the foul line.

 

Northern State had four players finish in double figures led by the 18 points and nine boards from Lexi Wadsworth. Rianna Fillipi (10 boards) and Laurie Rogers both had 12 points while Joie Spier added 11 points.

NSU finished 24-64 (37.5%) from the floor, 4-19 (21.1%) from the three-point line and 21-27 (77.8%) at the charity stripe.

The Wayne State College women will compete in their home-opener this weekend and begin South Division play with Concordia-St. Paul. WSC will host CSP on Friday, January 8 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 9 at 2:30 p.m. with only immediate family members in attendance an no visiting fans for the second straight weekend.
