ST. PAUL – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams closed out an NSIC South Division road trip over the weekend moving into the final month of conference games.
From the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, WSC visited Concordia-St. Paul Saturday.
In the women’s contest, Wayne State led early 18-17 after a quarter of play while both teams scored 21 points in the second. At the break, WSC led 39-38. CSP then took the lead in the second half thanks to a 22-16 third before Wayne State controlled the fourth 28-14. Final saw the Wildcat women win 83-74 to improve to 14-6 (9-5 NSIC) while the Golden Bears fell to 9-11 (6-8 NSIC).
Kylie Hammer recorded 22 points off the bench (7-8 FG/3-3 3PT/5-5 FT) followed by a double-double from Brittany Bongartz with 19 points and 11 rebounds (5-10 FG/9-9 FT). Erin Norling added 18 points and nine rebounds (7-17 FG/0-4 3PT/4-6 FT) while Halley Busse added 11 points and three assists (2-11 FG/1-9 3PT/6-6 FT).
Other scoring came from Josey Ryan with nine points and seven rebounds as Autumn Mlinar (three assists) and Taylor Wangerin both scored two points. Awoti Akoi tacked on two steals.
The Wildcat women finished 25-57 (43.9%) from the floor, 4-20 (20%) from behind the arc and 29-31 (93.5%) at the foul line.
Three Golden Bears scored double figures as Danielle Schaub poured in 24 points, Sydney Schultz added 14 points and Meghan DuBois tallied 12 points. Sydney Zgutowicz grabbed 10 rebounds.
CSP shot 27-66 (40.9%) from the field, 8-21 (38.1%) from the three-point line and 12-18 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
During the men’s game, WSC held a 35-32 first half lead after Concordia-St. Paul took an early lead. Both teams went back-and-forth in the second half finishing with 20 lead changes and six ties in the game as second half scoring was even at 31 all. Al’Tavius Jackson blocked a three-point shot in the final seconds to seal the victory of 66-63. The Wildcat men are now 8-15 (5-9 NSIC) while the Golden Bears fell to 6-12 (4-10 NSIC).
Nate Mohr paced WSC in scoring with 19 points (6-15 FG/5-10 3PT/2-2 FT) as Nick Ferrarini added 16 points and four assists (7-14 FG/2-6 3PT). Jordan Janssen recorded 15 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals (6-13 FG/3-4 FT).
Nate Thayer and Henry Penner both scored five points, Jackson tallied four points and Ben Denlinger tacked on two points, four assists and two blocks.
The Wildcat men finished 26-65 (40%) from the floor, 9-27 (33.3%) from behind the arc and 5-7 (71.4%) at the foul line.
Four Golden Bears recorded double figures led by Jacob Shields with 15 points. Lee Higgins, Jordan Coblin and Max Keefe all had 12 points. Cody Carlson and Carlos Barela both had seven rebounds.
CSP shot 25-58 (43.1%) from the field, 7-19 (36.8%) from the three-point line and 6-7 (85.7%) at the charity stripe.
The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will next host University of Mary on Friday, January 31 at 5:30/7:30 p.m. before entertaining Minot State on Saturday, February 1 at 3:30/5:30 p.m.
