Wildcat Women Hold Off Second Half Rally From Upper Iowa, Wayne State Men Win Sixth Straight

FAYETTE, IA – Friday night opened a pair of NSIC road games for the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams in Iowa.

From Dorman Gymnasium, WSC visited Upper Iowa University.

Opening with the women’s contest, Wayne State jumped out front 17-10 and controlled the second quarter, 20-9. At the break, WSC led 37-19. In the second half, the Peacocks started to mount a comeback with a 23-17 third quarter and 18-14 fourth. Wayne State held on for the 68-60 win to improve to 5-2 (1-1 NSIC) as Upper Iowa fell to 3-6 (0-2 NSIC).

Erin Norling scored 19 points on 7-24 shooting (1-5 3PT/4-4 FT) while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and five assists. Brittany Bongartz (three blocks) poured in 15 points and five rebounds as Halley Busse tallied 14 points and a team-high six assists. Kylie Hammer tacked on eight points as Andrea Larson picked up seven points and eight rebounds. Haley Vesey totaled three points and Taylor Reiner scored two points and six boards.

WSC shot 24-73 (32.9%) from the field, 8-26 (30.8%) from behind the arc and 12-16 (75%) from the foul line.

Upper Iowa was led in scoring by Savannah Domeyer with 23 points and 12 boards. Natalie Dinius picked up 12 points.

The Peacocks finished 19-68 (27.9%) from the floor, 6-24 (25%) from the three-point line and 16-24 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.

During the men’s game, WSC was all over Upper Iowa with a 43-28 first half lead. The ‘Cats also outscored the Peacocks 40-28 in the second half to win 83-56 and snap a 10-game losing streak against Upper Iowa. WSC has now won six straight to sit 7-1 (2-0 NSIC) while UIU is 3-4 (0-2 NSIC).

Kendall Jacks caught fire early going 7-7 from the field to finish 10-12 (1-1 FT) for 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Trevin Joseph followed with 16 points as Nick Ferrarini tallied 14 points, five boards and a team-high three steals. Tony Bonner scored eight points to go along with four rebounds, Vance Janssen added eight points, two assists and two steals. Other scoring came from Jordan Janssen (six points), Ben Dentlinger (six points/seven boards/four blocks), Al’Tavius Jackson and Nate Thayer with two points each. Luke TerHark tallied three assists.

WSC shot 38-69 (55.1%) from the floor, 4-17 (23.5%) from behind the arc and 3-3 (100%) at the free throw line.

Chris Olson led Upper Iowa in scoring with 14 points, followed by Munachiso Okonkwo with 12 points and five boards as Jareese Williams finished with 11 points and team-high six rebounds.

The Peacocks finished 22-60 (36.7%) from the field, 5-19 (26.3%) from the three-point line and 7-9 (77.8%) at the foul line.
