Wildcat Women Comeback Fell Short, Men Have Nine-Game Winning Streak Snapped At Buzzer

WAYNE – Sunday afternoon marked the second meeting in the month of December between travel partners during a NSIC South Division showdown.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, the ‘Cats played host to Augustana University.

During the women’s game, #12/23 Augustana jumped out front with a 25-15 opening quarter and saw their lead grow to at most 23 points in the second. WSC stormed back to pull within nine points at the break, down 52-43. Augie started to pull away again with a 17-15 third and 19-16 fourth to win 88-74. The Vikings improved to 14-1 (6-0 NSIC) as the ‘Cats had a three-game winning streak snapped to now sit 8-4 (3-3 NSIC).

Andrea Larson poured in a team-high 16 points for WSC on 4-12 shooting (4-10 3PT/4-6 FT) as Halley Busse and Kylie Hammer tallied 14 points each. Brittany Bongartz picked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Other Wildcat scoring saw Haley Vesey tack on seven points, Maggie Lowe with six, Amelia Ivester scored four points and Erin Norling finished with two points.

WSC shot 25-64 (39.1%) from the field, 11-30 (36.7%) from behind the arc and 13-22 (59.1%) from the foul line.

Augustana was led in scoring by Shelby Selland with 20 points and 11 rebounds followed by Vishe Rabb with 17 points. Janelle Shiffler tacked on 14 points as Abby Hora and Lynsey Prosser tabbed 11 points each.

Augie finished 32-77 (41.6%) from the floor, 8-29 (27.6%) from the three-point line and 16-19 (84.2%) from the charity stripe.

From the men’s contest, Wayne State built at most an 11-point lead halfway through the opening half to go up 35-26 at the break. Augie then came rolling back outscoring the ‘Cats 46-36 in the second half and with 3.8 second left on the clock inbounded the ball and sunk a three-pointer to win 72-71. Right before that play, Vance Janssen made an acrobatic lay-up to give the ‘Cats a two-point lead. Augustana improves to 9-3 (5-1 NSIC) as Wayne State saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end and are now 10-2 (5-1 NSIC).

Trevin Joseph led the Wildcats in scoring with 21 points as Kendall Jacks added 13 points. Vance Janssen and Jordan Janssen both tallied 10 points. Ben Dentlinger grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Other scoring came from Al’Tavius Jackson with seven points, Luke TerHark added six points and two each from Nick Ferrarini and Tony Bonner.

The ‘Cats finished 26-58 (44.8%) from the floor, 7-22 (31.8%) from behind the arc and 12-14 (85.7%) at the foul line.

Matt Cartwright scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half including the game-winner on 8-17 shooting (2-4 3PT/4-4 FT). Dylan LeBrun added 14 points, Jameson Bryan with 13 points and A.J. Plitzuweit tacked on 10 points. Bodey Behrends came off the bench and grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Augie closed out the game 28-57 (49.1%) from the field, 6-15 (40%) from the three-point line and 10-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line.
