SIOUX FALLS, SD – As two matches went final earlier in the day, the Wayne State College volleyball looked to begin their postseason run with the first round of the 2019 NSIC Volleyball Tournament Friday evening.
From the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, #5 WSC took on #4 St. Cloud State. The Huskies were rated #7 and Wayne State at #12 in the AVCA NCAA DII Coaches’ poll.
SCSU answered back after being swept in Wayne and handed the Wildcats a loss in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-23). The Huskies improve to 24-5 while the ‘Cats fell to 24-7 on the season.
Alyssa Ballenger was the top performer with 10 kills for WSC followed by Katie Stephens with eight kills. Haley Kauth posted a team-high 12 digs as Rachel Walker finished with 34 assists and four block assists. Another block leader was Tarrin Beller with five block assists (four kills).
SCSU outhit the Wildcats, .280 to .144 while recording more service aces (4-2) and team blocks (9-7) than the ‘Cats.
To close out the night, #8 Upper Iowa took down #1 Northern State in five sets (21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11).
Scores from earlier in the day: #2 Minnesota Duluth won in four sets over #7 Augustana (25-20, 13-25, 26-24, 25-14) and #3 Concordia-St. Paul won in five sets over #6 Winona State (20-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 16-14) #3 Concordia-St. Paul.
The semifinal round will feature #2 Minnesota Duluth vs. #3 Concordia-St. Paul at 4:30 p.m. while #4 St. Cloud State will face #8 Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. back at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The NSIC championship match is slated for 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 24.
