ST. PAUL, MN – The Wayne State College volleyball team closed out their regular season on the road with a ranked opponent.
WSC visited #6 Concordia-St. Paul in St. Paul, Minnesota Saturday afternoon.
Wayne State College split the weekend and the season series with the Golden Bears after posting a four-set win (28-26, 25-21, 17-25, 25-15). The ‘Cats end the regular season at 22-8 (13-7 NSIC) while CSP fell to 22-7 (16-4 NSIC).
Katie Stephens paced the ‘Cats with 20 kills and two blocks (one solo) while Alyssa Ballenger added 18 kills. Jaci Brahmer also tacked on nine kills with Tarrin Beller following with six kills and one ace. Megan Gebhardt tallied a team-high 50 set assists to go along with three blocks (one solo) as Haley Kauth picked up 15 digs and two service aces as well as another 13 digs and three aces from Morgan Alexander.
WSC outhit Concordia-St. Paul, .353 to .296 while also winning the service ace battle (6-4) as both teams recorded six blocks.
Wayne State College secured the #6 seed in the 2018 NSIC Volleyball Tournament and will face #3 Southwest Minnesota State at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6. *Correction from previously posted and announced over the weekend.
The Mustangs defeated WSC on September 8 in Wayne during a five-set match (23-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-22, 15-11). SMSU is ranked #9 in the most recent AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll with records of 21-7 overall and 16-4 in conference play.
Other first round NSIC volleyball games will feature: #8 Upper Iowa at #1 Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m.; #7 Minnesota State-Mankato at #2 Northern State at 6 p.m. and #5 Sioux Falls at #4 Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m.
