Wildcat Volleyball Moves To #5 In Rankings, Walker Tabbed NSIC Setter Of The Week

WAYNE – As the Wayne State College volleyball team prepares for their final non-conference match of the season this evening, the Wildcats moved up in the rankings yet again.

According to a release from the Wayne State Athletics office, Wayne State College moved up one spot to fifth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Monday afternoon.

WSC received 924 points in voting conducted by various Division II coaches from across the country.

The Wayne State College volleyball team is 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the NSIC following home sweeps over the weekend against Northern State and MSU Moorhead.

Sophomore Rachel Walker was also named the NSIC Setter of the of the Week for the second time this season.

Walker, a 5-9 setter from Lincoln (Southwest HS), averaged 13.67 set assists and 2.17 digs per set over the weekend.  She accounted for 44 assists and had nine digs in Friday’s 3-0 sweep over Northern State and followed with 38 set assists, four digs and one block in a 3-0 Saturday sweep against MSU Moorhead.

For the season, Walker is averaging 10.46 assists per set to rank fifth in the NSIC and also produces 2.15 digs per set while tied for the team lead in service aces with 15.

Washburn (16-1) is still the top team in DII for volleyball. Four of the top 10 teams are NSIC teams being WSC at #5; #7 Concordia-St. Paul (15-4) fell back three spots; #8 Winona State (16-2) moved up a spot and #10 Southwest Minnesota State (15-2) also moved up a spot. Other ranked NSIC teams include #14 St. Cloud State (13-4) up two spots as Minnesota Duluth (62 pts); Northern State (30) and Augustana (7) are all receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots.

WSC will host Mount Marty Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match followed by road matches at #7 Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota State-Mankato Saturday at 2 p.m.
